African Serval

Servals are found in a variety of habitats across sub-Saharan Africa, including savannas, grasslands, and woodlands. They are adaptable and can survive in a range of different environments, but they typically prefer areas with low human population densities and high prey availability. They also can be found in wetlands, such as marshes, swamps and along rivers where they can find prey such as fish, frogs and reptiles.

Servals are solitary animals and do not form packs like African Wild Dogs. Mating typically occurs between February and March, and the gestation period is around 2-3 months. The female serval will give birth to a litter of 1-6 kittens in a den or hidden location.

The kittens are born blind and helpless, and the mother will provide all of the care for the first few weeks of their lives. The kittens will begin to eat solid food around 6-8 weeks of age, and will start to explore and learn to hunt around 3-4 months of age. The mother will continue to provide care and protection for the kittens until they are around 6-8 months old, at which point they will become independent and start to establish their own territories.

Servals are opportunistic hunters and will prey on a wide variety of animals, depending on what is available in their area. Their diet mainly includes small mammals such as rodents and hares, but they will also prey on birds, reptiles, and insects. They are known for their jumping ability and will often hunt by leaping into the air to catch birds and insects.

Servals are also known for their ability to capture prey in water, they are excellent swimmers and can take prey in shallow water or wetlands.

Their hunting style is unique, they use their long legs to stalk their prey and then make a quick dash to catch it. They are also known for their stealth and patience, they will wait for the right opportunity to make a move.
