What Do Giraffes Eat?

Giraffes are herbivores and feed mainly on leaves, flowers, and fruit from trees and shrubs. Their long necks and prehensile tongues allow them to reach high branches that other herbivores cannot, giving them access to a wide variety of food.

One of the key adaptations that enables giraffes to feed on trees is their incredibly long necks. Giraffes have seven neck vertebrae, which are elongated and can measure up to 10 inches (25 cm) in length. This gives them a tremendous reach, enabling them to reach branches as high as 16 feet (5 meters) off the ground.

In addition to their long necks, giraffes also have prehensile tongues that are able to grasp and manipulate food effectively. Their tongues measure around 18 inches (45 cm) in length and are covered in a tough, leathery texture that protects them from the sharp thorns of acacia trees, which are a common food source.

Giraffes feed throughout the day, taking short breaks between meals to rest and drink water. They have a large and complex digestive system that allows them to break down the tough cellulose in the leaves they eat, and they are able to extract a significant amount of nutrition from this low-quality food source.

Giraffes have a varied diet, and they feed on a variety of plant species depending on the time of year and their location. Some of the most common plants they feed on include acacia, mimosa, and wild apricot trees, as well as shrubs such as the rosy periwinkle and the spiky euphorbia.

It is also important to note that giraffes play a critical role in their ecosystem as seed dispersers. When giraffes feed on trees and shrubs, they swallow large quantities of seeds, which are later deposited in their dung. This helps to distribute new plants and promote forest growth, which provides a habitat for many other species. Giraffes care for their young by nursing them. Giraffe calves are typically born weighing around 150 pounds (68 kg) and standing at a height of around 6 feet (1.8 meters), making them some of the tallest newborns of any mammal species. Despite their size, giraffe calves are unable to feed on their own and must rely on their mothers for sustenance.

To feed their young, giraffe mothers use their long necks to reach down to the calf's level and position their udders directly in front of the calf's mouth. This allows the calf to suckle easily, as its neck is still too short to reach the ground.

Giraffe mothers are highly protective of their calves, and they will often stand guard over them while they feed, using their necks and heads to keep a lookout for potential predators. Giraffe mothers will also often nurse their calves while walking, which helps to keep the calf moving and reduces the risk of predation.

In addition to nursing, giraffe calves will also begin to feed on solid food when they are around one month old. At this stage, they will start to nibble on leaves and branches, and by the time they are one year old, they are usually weaned and feeding independently.

Giraffe mothers will continue to care for their calves for several years, even after they have become independent feeders. During this time, the mother and calf will maintain a close bond, and the mother will continue to protect her calf from potential predators.

Overall, giraffes have a diverse and specialized diet that enables them to thrive in their African habitats. With their long necks, prehensile tongues, and large digestive systems, they are able to feed on a wide variety of trees and shrubs, which provides them with the essential nutrients they need to survive.
